May Day began as an ancient Northern Hemisphere Spring Festival celebration with dances, singing, and cake. In the late 19th century, May 1 was designated International Workers’ Day to honor workers. In certain areas in the U. S., May baskets are still filled with flowers or treats and left on someone’s doorstep (ring the bell and dash away quickly). Maypole dances and treats are popular with elementary students.
Bryn Mawr College in PA has a long tradition of celebrating May Day on the Sunday after the last week of classes. Activities and schedule of events may vary but generally the day begins with a group breakfast, a parade, Maypole Dancing, cultural dancing, traditional Greek plays, music displays, a large concert on the Merion Green, a movie The Philadelphia Story, and seniors singing their last song of the year on the Senior Steps. How would you like to celebrate May Day this year? Would you like to bring a little sunshine into someone else’s life anonymously? ANOTHER MINI GRANT
Two teachers, Mrs. Strader and Ms. Vigil from Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Reno who co-teach autistic students, submitted a proposal for field trip expenses on April 19 to the Discovery Museum in Reno. The proposal was approved at the April meeting and Ardynne promptly delivered a check to the school.
