EARLY CHILDHOOD PROJECT Suggestions for goody bags for preschool children at Washoe Inspire: fat crayons, stickers, small tins of play dough, books for ages 3-5, etc. Please no markers, paints, or scissors. Be adventurous – everything interests little ones.
Please bring whatever supplies you have already purchased so we can get started on the initial bags . . . maybe 20 for our first attempt. Lori is willing to provide a sign-up sheet for the next meeting so members don’t all buy the same products. Members will be informed at the meeting about the total number of bags needed for the entire pre-school, when they will be distributed, etc. IT’S ELECTION TIME Women were granted the right to vote on August 18, 1920 (19th Amendment). Your vote is important, your opinion is important. This organization is made up of respectful and open-minded women who can agree to disagree and still compromise to get things accomplished.
You are a role model for your children, students, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. Politics do not need to divide you. Throughout history, the pendulum has swung back and forth. Early voting, absentee voting, or voting at the polls provide multiple opportunities for more people to participate. Please fulfill your responsibility as an educator and vote your conscience. BE PROUD, VOTE. |
CANDIDATES’ PANEL
Ardynne moderated a panel of candidates on October 13 at the Evelyn Mount Center. The following candidates graciously participated: Kalie Work – Recorder’s Office, Tina Davis-Hersey – Senate District 16, Matthew Buehler – Washoe County Treasurer, and Verita Black-Prothro – Public Administrator, whose visit was brief as she was on her way to another meeting. Although Ardynne had probing questions to ask each candidate, the audience was encouraged to ask questions too. We were honored to have members from Alpha Chapter join us. It was an informal, friendly, and informative session.
NEW SCAM ALERT
A clever scheme that sounds legitimate from the Fraud Department at your bank: Spoofing the 1-800 number on the back of your banking cards. The call starts out sounding official --asking if you made a $130 purchase at Walmart/Kohls/Home Depot/etc. in Chicago/Orlando/wherever. When you answer “no,” the agent offers to immediately remove the charge and advises closing your account and opening a new one immediately. The banks and credit card companies really do make these legitimate calls. The Pin Codes and Passwords are where the scam occurs. Read on.
Our news is filled with major companies being hacked and thus these scammers already have your name, phone number, address and social security number on hand. They will verify this information with you so, of course, you assume an honest concern from the bank, credit card company, etc. The agent will ask you to key in a new pin number that is not visible to him (not true), then ask to verify your current pin number. Once he has your current pin number, he can drain your cash from any ATM. HINTS:
TOUR BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB,
We thank Alpha Chapter for inviting us to join them in a fantastic tour of the Donald W. Reynolds Facility, the main campus of the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows in Reno. Ta-Tiana Anderson Hall, Teen Services Director and Activities Coordinator, conducted the tour at 4pm on October 10.
The Club was established in Reno in 1976. In 1983, girls were invited to join. A major capital expansion began in September 2004 enlarging the 9th Street facility to 80,000 square feet. Today there are over 20 sites under one umbrella serving youth 6-18 in Reno, Sparks, and Fernley. Annual membership is only $20; however, no child is ever turned away due to lack of funds. Before and after-school programs and full-day school break programs (including summer, fall, winter, and spring), are available for an additional fee. Nutritious meals are served daily at all locations. Numerous programs are available: athletics, technology, arts, leadership, strengthening families, community service, etc. The core programs concentrate on character and leadership development, health and life skills, sports including fitness & recreation, educational & career development, and the arts. The S.M.A.R.T. Moves Program (Skills, Mastery And Resistance Training) includes decision-making and critical-thinking skills, nutritional information, how to avoid alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and premature sexual activity, as well as bullying and suicide awareness. At the Donald W. Reynolds facility teens 13-18 have access to homework assistance, art, music (DJ Booth), computers, athletics, career information, scholarship opportunities, etc. Separate learning and recreational areas are available for elementary, middle, and high school students. You would be so impressed with the fantastic new huge gymnasium, small gymnasium, fitness center, cafeteria and kitchen facilities, computer rooms, career centers, arts/crafts rooms, etc. A calendar of events is posted online for students, families and the community. If another opportunity should arise to visit this facility, you would be well advised to participate and view first hand the wonderful educational experience offered to so many students. As educators, we wish all students could participate and benefit from the services offered by the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. PS: Throughout our one-hour tour students kept stopping by to say “Hello” to Ta-Tiana or give/accept a hug or simply called her name and waved as they rushed on their way. Happy kids! |
